What is an RFT Blood Test and Why It’s Important for Kidney Health

What Is an RFT Blood Test?

An RFT (Renal Function Test) is a group of blood tests that assess how well your kidneys are functioning. These tests measure specific markers that show how effectively your kidneys filter waste from the bloodstream.

Key components of an RFT include:

Creatinine: A waste product from muscle activity. High levels may indicate reduced kidney function.
Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN): Measures urea levels in blood; elevated levels may signal kidney issues.
Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR): Estimates how much blood the kidneys filter each minute.
Electrolytes: Includes sodium, potassium, and chloride—regulated by the kidneys.
Albumin: A protein that should be minimal in urine if kidneys are functioning properly.
